"Although Cape Verde is an open society and there are no longer manysecrets about how it is run, and while large numbers of tourists now visitit quite happily, relatively little is known about it abroad. Facts and figures are lacking, including fairly basic ones. Its long and often tragic history is inadequately explored and explained. And its culture, which has attracted attention worldwide, could still benefit from deeper understanding. Since 1979, the Historical Dictionary of the Republic of Cape Verde and its successors have been filling this gap."
